LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2020) – With over 10,600 fans in attendance, the LA KISS (3-12) fell to the San Jose SaberCats (11-4) Sunday evening at the Honda Center in Week 17 of the 2014 Arena Football League season.
After several attempts to push the ball down the field, LA KISS opened up Saturday night’s matchup on a field goal by Kenny Spencer, 3-0 (8:46). However, the SaberCats were quick to fire back on a 9-yard slant pass from Stanley to Curry (kick is good), SaberCats lead 7-3. With just three minutes left in the first, Guiton connects on a 23-yard pass to Goodson. Quick to follow, Guiton throws to Thompkins for the touchdown (kick is good) and Los Angeles takes back the lead, 10-7.
The battle continued in the second quarter as Stanley connected with Gray for an early touchdown, Pertuit’s kick was good and made it 14-10. With less than 10 minutes on the board, Guiton’s pass is intercepted by David Hyland, followed by a 34-yard return for a touchdown (21-10). Another completed pass by Stanley to Gray puts the SaberCats ahead 27-10 (failed kick attempt). With 1:20 on the clock, Stanley tosses a short pass to Curry for a touchdown, SaberCats pull ahead 34-10. But the KISS were not done yet, 52 seconds left in the half and JJ Raterink connects with Morgan (rush attempt failed), 34-16. But leave it to San Jose’s dynamic duo, Stanley and Gray to push one final touchdown into the end zone to close out the half, 41-16.
Within the first two minutes of the third quarter, Curry scores on a pass from Stanley (48-16). Later Raterink would find Goodson on a 34-yard pass for a touchdown (failed 2-pt conversion). Immediately responding, Armstrong rushed up the middle for the touchdown, SaberCats hold the lead strong at 55-22 (7:07). But LA “Captain” Morgan quickly responded on a 47-yard pass from Raterink, 55-28 (4:59).
The SaberCats opened up the fourth quarter on a 58-yard touchback and completed kick by Pertuit, increasing their lead over the KISS to 69-28. A rush by Raterink and a last minute touchdown by Denni Havrilla to Rich Ranglin brought the game to a final score of 75-34 giving San Jose the win.
Next week Los Angeles is on the road and will look to take on the Portland Thunder on Saturday, July 12 in Week 18 of the 2014 Arena Football League season. Kickoff is set for 7:30p.m. (PDT). Single game tickets are still available at ticketmaster.com or the Honda Center box office.
